Urban Greening
Urban greening includes public landscape and forestry projects that benefit the local environment and people. In fact, green space is a strong indicator of a community’s health and well-being. To support a more equitable distribution of urban green space, CCLB is a partner in a range of projects.

The addition of green space to local neighborhoods has many important benefits. In addition to making people feel calmer and happier, urban greening can reduce flooding, improve air quality, offset carbon emissions, and create habitats for local wildlife. And that’s not all! Greening urban areas also reduces temperatures, which is really important in cities. Cities tend to be hot due to building materials, traffic and other activities, and more. Introducing greenery is an effective way to create a cooler microclimate!

Long Beach residents can apply to the Long Beach Office of Sustainability’s Tree Planting program! Eligible residents in priority neighborhoods can receive fruit trees from the city.

Tree Planting & Maintenance
Since its inception, the Conservation Corps of Long Beach has been an active participant in the planting of trees across the Gateway Cities region. Our Corpsmembers have planted thousands of trees on residential and commercial streets, helping to both beautify and cool down our city! At Willow Springs Park, we’re also repurposing dying trees and turning them into furniture and lumber for the community.

Community Garden Support
Community gardening is a great way for local people to boost resilience and enjoy the outdoors. The Conservation Corps supports community gardens by offering assistance building compost bins, setting up irrigation systems, and organizing landscaping on the garden plots. We look forward to continuing to support the work of local gardners across the Gateway Cities region!

Landscape Construction & Management
At the Corps we build and maintain parks, create drought tolerant landscapes for local businesses and residents, and work on projects such as the local Wrigley Greenbelt, which allow us to increase air quality, improve recreational spaces, and increase stormwater runoff control. These are critical ecosystem services!
